June 06 : Major Historical Events

Each day has its own significance. The importance of each day is signified by many happenings that took place on that particular day. The major events that happened in History on June 06 are listed below.

1674: Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire, was crowned.
1882: More than 100,000 inhabitants of Mumbai were killed when a cyclone in the Arabian Sea pushes huge waves into the harbour.
1944: The allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control during World War II. The term D-Day is used for this day.
1946: Gerhart Hauptmann, German novelist, poet and playwright, Nobel Prize laureate, passed away (b. 1862).
1949: George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four was published.
1984: Indian army stormed the Golden Temple under Operation Bluestar.
2004: Tamil was established as a classical language by the President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, in a joint sitting of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.
2013: Jerome Karle, American chemist and academic, Nobel Prize laureate passed away (b. 1918).
